Seraphinite is a silicate mineral called clinochlore. Clinochlores get their name from the Greek word chloros which means green in relation to their primary color. Another trade name for this stone is seraphinite.

These two trade names are due to the appearance of the stone: it has shiny inclusions that resemble the feathers of an angel in particular, the feathers of seraphim. Individual stones show bright inclusions of varying degrees of strength.
